Here’s What It’s Like to Get Hit With the Shockwave of an Explosion

It’s pretty bad.

Whenever a big explosion happens, the damage from the actual “fiery blast” part of it is only one part of the equation. For example, in the case of a nuclear bomb, about 50 percent of the energy released comes in the form of a shockwave.

Youssef Kawtharani knows how bad a shockwave can be firsthand. During an explosion in Beirut in 2020, Kawtharani happened to be filming — capturing not only the blast, but its aftermath. In this video, he shows what that looked like before recounting just how insane of an experience it was.
